Golden Back
Eastern lowland gorilla - Gorilla beringei graueri
I wanted to take the challenge of painting a black animal on black background to create a heavy feeling. But I also wanted to bring out the tenderness in the eyes of the gorilla, wrongly reputed as a fierce and violent creeature for a long time. It was truly a joy to work on his musculature and play with the back light.
Baobab Fiesta.
Madame Berthe's mouse lemur - Microcebus berthae
In my last trip to Madagascar, I only stayed in Centre ValBio - Ranomafana and did not have a chance to travel West. I hope to be able to come back and see the grandeur of the baobabs, its flowers, and, with a bit more luck, this species of mouse lemur. Sometimes I try not to make the animals too obvious so that the viewer has to look for them like it would be the case in the wild.
Ballerinos
Silky sifaka - Propithecus candidus
This is remotely inspired by Henri Matisse’s chef-d’oeuvre “La Danse”. The ground jumping action of sifakas is for me both hilarious and graceful, even more for this species that is almost fully white like ballet dancers.
Blue Eyes
Blue-eyed black lemur - Eulemur flavifrons
I guess it’s hard for all artists who want to paint this primate to disregard its beautiful blue eyes. I am equally captured by the eye color as well as the texture of its black fur.
Canopy Chasing
Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey - Rhinopithecus avunculus
I can’t resist the temptation to depict the jumping motion of primates, even though this is a gross speculation from my part as I’ve never seen a  Tonkin Snub-Nosed Monkey in the wild, even less them jumping from branch to branch. For this painting I relied a lot on beautiful images of my friend Le Khac Quyet who works hard to protect this species.

Silence Crossing -
Pig-tailed langur - Simias concolor
The initial idea was to have a mother pig-tailed langur cautiously leading her infants through a clearing on the canopy, but I wasn’t quite sure about their behavior so I left out the infants which were supposed to be in the dark shadows of the ficus.
Trung Khanh morning
Cao Vit gibbon - Nomascus nasutus
Even though I had a near death experience on the trip to see this elusive gibbon, falling 4m down a ravine, I fondly remember Trung Khanh - a beautiful commune in the north of Vietnam where the gibbon lives - and its people. Thank you Nguyen Duc Tho for having taken me on this trip.
Ficus Spirit
Pygmy Tarsier - Tarsius pumilus
I’ve seen similar species in the Philippines and tried to imagine how T. pumilus would look in the Sulawesi forest, emerging from a huge ficus tree in the late evening. According to Dr Gursky, the environment should be more mossy but it was too late to make changes. I hope to travel to Sulawesi one day to prove this setting does exists.
Grey-shanked Douc Langur portrait - Pygathrix cinerea
Chorus
Northern brown howler - Alouatta guariba guariba
I heard this sound once, and even received a few branches on my head. It was quite intimidating and I wanted to reproduce the sound with my acrylic colors.
